JUSTIN T. WHISENANT, MD NEUROINTERVENTIONAL SURGERY

Dr. Whisenant arrives to St. Petersburg after 3 years of private practice in Dallas, Texas as an interventional neuroadiologist. Previous to that,  he completed two clinical fellowships in neuroradiology and endovascular surgical neuroradiology at the world-renowned Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, a part of Washington University Saint Louis School of Medicine.  He received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, where he played on the collegiate basketball and football teams and studied genetics, cell, and developmental biology, graduating in 2001.  Dr. Whisenant received his medical degree from the St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, WI, where he was awarded the Dr. Morris Alpert Legacy of Excellence merit-based scholarship, named to the Chancellor’s list 8 times, and finished Summa Cum Laude and valedictorian of the class of 2006 with a perfect 4.0 GPA. After medical school, he completed an internship in internal medicine at SUNY Downstate (Long Island College Hospital) in Brooklyn, NY and was named “Best Intern of the Year”, an award voted on by both peers and supervising faculty. After the medicine internship, Dr. Whisenant relocated to Texas for a 4 year residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center located in San Antonio. During residency, Dr. Whisenant received the award for achieving the highest score on the American College of Radiology (ACR) In-service exam in 2009 after he scored in the 99th percentile on this exam that is taken by all radiologists at the same training level across the United States.  Dr. Whisenant most recently completed fellowships in Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. He is double board certified in diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

As one of the only Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiologists in Florida, Dr. Whisenant’s practice is centered on performing emergency stroke interventions for patients experiencing sudden severe stroke symptoms (such as one sided paralysis and/or inability to speak), in particular in the performance of mechanical thrombectomy.  He is also highly skilled in the endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, carotid artery disease, intracranial angioplasty and stenting, brain and spine tumor embolization, and many other neurovascular conditions of the brain, head, neck, and spine.  Furthermore, Dr. Whisenant is an expert in kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty for spinal fractures, sacralplasty for sacral insufficiency fractures, and radiofrequency ablation for painful bone metastases, all utilizing the latest technology and advanced image-guided techniques.
